US Seen as Greatest Threat to World Peace, Global Survey Finds
CNS News

… A global poll finds that the country seen as representing the greatest threat to peace today is the United States. Not only did the U.S. top the list with an aggregate of 24 percent, but the runner-up threat country, Pakistan, was way behind at eight percent … The view that the U.S. poses the greatest threat to peace was also strongly held in some purported U.S. allies … Germans were more ambivalent, with the U.S. selected as the greatest threat (17 percent), just ahead of Iran (16 percent); as were British respondents, who put the U.S. and Iran in joint first place among threats to peace (15 percent each) … American respondents named Iran as the greatest threat to peace (20 percent)

Russia Turns East at Shocking Speed with China Mega Energy Deals

Russia Turns East at Shocking Speed with China Mega Energy Deals

Column: Economics

Region: Eastern Asia

Country: China

While Western mainstream media concentrates attention on the emissions agreement signed by US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi at the recent APEC Beijing Summit, Russia’s Putin and China’s Xi quietly signed major new energy agreements that will have enormous geopolitical significance in bringing about the very nightmare that US strategists such as Zbigniew Brzezinski warned about way back in 1997 when America seemed indomitable as sole Superpower.

The impetus, ironically, to the array of strategic Russia-China deals are the very economic and financial sanctions the rather stupid strategists at the US Treasury and National Security Council devised to “punish” Putin beginning last May for allegedly “invading” Crimea.

China to be Russia’s major gas customer

On November 9 in meetings on the periphery of the Beijing APEC summit, Putin and Xi signed 10 agreements. Far the most significant is the one for the so-called West Route gas pipeline that will connect gas fields in western Siberia with northwest China through the Altai area of Xinjiang Autonomous Region. They also agreed on provisions for possible second and third sections to be added later that would bring capacity to a staggering 100 billion cubic meters a year. West Route is designated a priority and to be finished in six years. Initially it will give China another 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually over 30 years.

The West Route is in addition to the so-called Russian East Route pipeline deal signed between Putin and Xi in May. That deal, a $400 billion agreement over 30 years will begin sending gas in 2018 for another 38 billion cubic meters annually from Russia to China. When both East and West Route pipelines are operational, Russia will supply some 40% of the current Chinese annual natural gas consumption, replacing the EU as Russia’s largest gas export market. Today China consumes 169 billion cubic meters annually.

The first pipeline laying in Russia for the East Route began already in September. When it was signed in May, many Western sources were shocked, as negotiations had been ongoing for almost a decade. It was called the “Holy Grail” and the “Gas Deal of the Century.” With the signing now only six months later of a second almost equally large West Route gas deal, Russia and China have just agreed to “Holy Grail II.”

At the same Beijing meeting the two presidents and their respective state oil companies Rosneft and CNPC signed a deal whereby CNPC buys a 10% stake in Rosneft subsidiary Vankorneft which operates the huge Russian Vankor oil field. China will receive some $7 billion worth of Russian oil from Vankor in the deal.

Notably, largely unnoticed by western media, China’s state Xinhua news agency reported that a day before opening of the Beijing APEC forum, the Chinese and Russian military leadership reached wide-ranging cooperation agreements as well. Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the Russian General Staff and Wang Guanzhong, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), reached agreements on a number of important military cooperation projects during the 17th round of strategic consultation. Xinhua quoted Gerasimov, “Many cooperation projects in critical areas were agreed upon during the current round of consultation.”

They reportedly discussed “the current international and regional security situations, regional issues as well as the relationship between the two militaries”, said Xinhua. One can wonder just what those “situations” might be, perhaps the brazen US and EU intervention into Ukraine to give the excuse for financial warfare and a proxy war against Russia, and perhaps the US National Endowment for Democracy’s “Umbrella Revolution” in Hong Kong, designed to rattle Beijing as well as the Obama “Asia Pivot” military focus on China? The Washington neo-conservative hawks and their backers in the CIA, State Department and NSC are managing to accelerate the very Eurasian alliance that is they are trying to destroy.

The United States, during my own childhood growing up in Texas in the 1950’s, was the unchallenged industrial leader in the world economy. Americans were rightly proud of their industrial excellence. Tragically, today the United States has managed to transform itself into the world’s largest virtual economy. The main item produced today is virtual money by the Federal Reserve to give paper steroids to the mega banks of Wall Street so they can continue their criminal enterprises with increasingly worthless paper dollars.

America’s industrial excellence is mostly a relic of the past. Factory work has been outsourced to…the Peoples’ Republic of China. Domestically, American democracy, or at least its earlier traces, has given way to a rule by power-addicted loveless American Oligarchs. Now those loveless oligarchs see their world, their power, threatened by a growing cooperation between the great nations of Eurasia, led by China and Russia with Iran also playing a significant role.

Ironically their very stupid attempts to initiate global dis-order and a new world war, in order to retain their failing grip on power, is having the opposite effect. It is driving China, Russia, the entire BRICS countries and other nations into closer ties on all levels to build a defense against that attempt. The oligarchs and their war machine are stupid precisely because they seem incapable of thinking in comprehensive terms of how interconnected everything in our universe is. They seem blinded by their addiction.

Putin Calmly Told Harper to “Bugger Off You Gas Bag”

Putin Calmly Told Harper to “Bugger Off You Gas Bag”

BRISBANE — Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper today repeated his version of a “testy exchange” with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 meetings, claiming he power-crunched Putin’s hand and bluntly told him to “get out of Ukraine”.

Putin, however, has a different version.

The Russian leader says that Harper’s voice was cracking and he “had a wet food stain on his tie.”

“I call a gas bag a gas bag,” Putin told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation matter-of-factly just before boarding his plane to return to Moscow.

“Yes, Mr. Harper did sort of stutter and mutter get out of Ukraine, but he just kept staring anywhere but my eyes like he was mad at my nose or something.”

“I felt badly for him…he was so nervous.”

Harper had told CNN, CBC and Reuters News immediately following the 30-second confrontation that he went mano-a-mano with Putin and was tempted to “crush his knuckles and make him say Uncle” during their awkward handshake.

“Look. Today I had to be a bully…something I very rarely do, something I don’t like to do,” Harper told media.

When egged on by a FOX News reporter, Harper gave a slow-motion re-enactment of how he says he crushed Putin’s hand, stepped boldly inside the Russian’s comfort zone, glared menacingly down at him, and gruffly delivered the much-quoted line, “Get out of Ukraine.”

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer (not his real name) aired audio on his show earlier today where the word “gas bag” can be clearly heard and Mr. Harper seems to reply, “Sorry”.

CNN also noted that Mr. Harper was sweating profusely at the time.

Has Washington Just Shot Itself in the Oily Foot?

Has Washington Just Shot Itself in the Oily Foot?

Column: Economics

Region: USA in the World

By now even the New York Times is openly talking about the secret Obama Administration strategy of trying to bankrupt Russia by using its oil-bloated Bedouin bosom buddy, Saudi Arabia, to collapse the world price of oil. However, it’s beginning to look like the neo-conservative Russia-haters and Cold war wanna-be hawks around Barack Obama may have just shot themselves in their oily foot. As I referred to it in an earlier article, their oil price strategy is basically stupid. Stupid, as all consequences have not been taken into account. Take now the impact on US oil production as prices plummet.

The collapse in US oil prices since September may very soon collapse the US shale oil bubble and tear away the illusion that the United States will surpass Saudi Arabia and Russia as the world’s largest oil producer. That illusion, fostered by faked resource estimates issued by the US Department of Energy, has been a lynchpin of Obama geopolitical strategy.

Now the financial Ponzi scheme behind the increase of US domestic oil output the past several years is about to evaporate in a cloud of fictitious smoke. The basic economics of shale oil production are being ravaged by the 23% oil price drop since John Kerry and Saudi King Abdullah had their secret meeting near the Red Sea in early September to agree on the Saudi oil price war against Russia.

Wall Street bank analysts at Goldman Sachs just issued a 2015 forecast that US oil prices, measured by a benchmark called WTI (West Texas Intermediate) will fall to $70 a barrel. In September 2013, WTI was more than $106 a barrel. That translates into a sharp 34% price collapse in just a few months. Why is that critical to the US shale production? Because, unlike conventional crude oil deposits, shale oil or tight oil as industry calls it, depleted dramatically faster.

A comprehensive new analysis just issued by David Hughes, a Canadian oil geo-scientist with thirty years’ experience with the Geological Survey of Canada, using data from existing US shale oil production that has now become public for the first time (the shale oil story is very recent), shows dramatic rates of oil volume decline from US shale oil wells:

The three year average well decline rates for the seven shale oil basins measured for the report range from an astounding 60-percent to 91-percent. That means over those three years, the amount of oil coming out of the wells decreases by that percentage. This translates to 43-percent to 64-percent of their estimated ultimate recovery dug out during the first three years of the well’s existence. Four of the seven shale gas basins are already in terminal decline in terms of their well productivity: the Haynesville Shale, Fayetteville Shale, Woodford Shale and Barnett Shale.

A decrease in oil daily of between 60% and 91% for these best possible shale oil regions means the oil companies must drill deeper to even stay still with oil production, let alone increase total oil volume. That means the drillers must spend more money to drill deeper, a lot more. According to Hughes, the Obama administration Department of Energy has uncritically taken rosy forecast numbers given them by the companies that boost the US shale oil myth. His calculations show future US shale oil output only 10% that estimated for 2040 by the Energy Department.

Hughes describes the current deadly dilemma of the shale oil companies as a “drilling treadmill.” They must drill more and more wells just to keep production levels flat. The oil companies have already gone after the most promising shale oil areas, so-called “sweet spots,” to maximize their production. Now as production begins to decline terminally, they must start drilling in spaces with less rich oil and gas returns. He adds, “if the future of U.S. oil and natural gas production depends on resources in the country’s deep shale deposits…we are in for a big disappointment.”

Oil price collapse

What Hughes describes was the state of shale oil before the start of the Kerry-Abdullah Saudi oil price war. Now US WTI oil prices have dropped a catastrophic 25% in six weeks, and still falling. Other large oil producers like Russia and Iran are in turn flooding the world market with their oil to increase revenue for their state budgets, adding to a global oil supply glut. That in turn pressures prices more.

The shale oil and gas bonanza of the past five years in the USA has been built on a foundation of zero Federal Reserve interest rates and huge speculative investment by hungry Wall Street firms and funds. Because of the ultra-rapid oil well depletion, when market oil prices collapse, the entire economics of lending to the shale oil drillers collapses as well. Money suddenly vanishes and debt-strapped oil companies begin real problems.

According to Philip Verleger, former head of President Carter’s Office of Energy Policy and now an energy consultant, in North Dakota’s Bakken shale, one of the most important new shale oil regions, oil at $70 a barrel could cut production 28 percent to 800,000 barrels a day by February from 1.1 million barrels a day in July. “The cash flow will go down as the prices go down, the amount of money advanced to these people to continue the drilling will dry up entirely, so you’ll see a marked slowdown in drilling,” said Verleger.

Myths, Lies and Oil Wars

The end of the shale oil bubble would deal a devastating blow to the US oil geopolitics. Today an estimated 55% of US oil production and all the production increase of the past several years comes from fracking for shale oil. With financing cut off because of economic risk amid falling oil prices, shale oil drillers will be forced to halt new drilling that is needed merely to maintain a steady oil output.

The aggressive US foreign policy in the Middle East—its war against Syria’s al-Assad regime, its hardball oil sanctions against Iran, its sanctions against Russian oil projects, its cynical toleration of ISIS in Iraqi oil regions, its refusal to intervene to stabilize the Libyan oil economy but instead to tolerate dis-order are all premised on a cocky view in Washington that the USA is once again the King of Oil in the world and can afford to play high-risk oil geopolitics. The official government agency responsible for advising the CIA, Department of Defense, State Department and White House on energy, the US Department of Energy, has issued projections of US shale oil growth based on myths and lies. That has led the Obama White House to launch oil wars based on those same myths and lies about the rosy prospects of shale oil.

This oily arrogance was epitomized in a speech by then Obama National Security Adviser Tom Donilon. In an April 2013 speech at Columbia University, Donilon, then Obama’s national security adviser, publicly expressed this: “America’s new energy posture allows us to engage from a position of greater strength. Increasing US energy supplies acts as a cushion that helps reduce our vulnerability to global supply disruptions and price shocks. It also affords us a stronger hand in pursuing and implementing our international security goals.”

The next three or so months in the US shale oil domain will be strategic.

Whistleblower urges external probe into EU mission in Kosovo

Whistleblower urges external probe into EU mission in Kosovo

31.10.14 @ 19:13

  1. <img width="24" height="24" src="cid:image003.jpg

BRUSSELS – Only an external investigation can restore faith in Eulex, the EU rule of law mission in Kosovo, Maria Bamieh, the British prosecutor at the heart of corruption revelations has told EUobserver.

The revelations, first published in Kosovo daily Koha Ditore earlier this week, say: that a senior official colluded with suspects in criminal cases; that another official took bribes to shut down prosecutions; and that a third one quashed internal Eulex probes.

The story cited transcripts of wire-tapped conversations as well as internal letters written by Bamieh to her superiors to alert them of wrongdoing.

In a second story, published on Friday (31 October), Koha Ditore cited other documents showing that Eulex gave confidential information to Serbian intelligence services.

Bamieh told EUobserver on Thursday the EU mission also: turned a blind eye to a miscarriage of justice in a triple-murder case; failed to protect witnesses; and lied to press.

She said two Kosovo men – who are in jail for a bombing in 2007 and for killing three other people the same year – were convicted of the triple murder on evidence “that would never stand up in a British court”.

The men agreed to give Eulex information on the Kosovo mafia in return for promises that Eulex would re-examine the triple-murder case and would guarantee their future safety.

But Bamieh said neither promise was kept.

“They’ve been spilling their guts out, telling Eulex police everything that’s happening [in Kosovo] … Now they’re saying: ‘When Eulex goes [its mandate expires in 2016] everybody knows we’ve been talking and we’re going to be killed’ and Eulex is doing nothing for them. There is no lasting protetcion offered to these individuals”.

Referring to the Koha Ditore revelations, she noted: “I don’t know whether I touched on the tip of an iceberg or not, whether it [Eulex corruption] runs a lot deeper … I can only speak about what I found”.

But she added that some EU states’ seconded judges and policemen are more prone to temptation than others’.

“This country is corrupt. Everywhere you look in Kosovo there is corruption. If you bring in senior people [to Eulex] from poor countries, or countries which also have endemic corruption, they are more likely to end up colluding with the locals”.

“I’m not saying that all Italians, all Greeks, or all Romanians [for instance] are bad, but people [Eulex staff] who come from other parts of Europe … are maybe not so susceptible”, she said.

When the Koha Ditore story broke, the EU foreign service, which is in charge of Eulex, said: “Since 2013, Eulex and Kosovo judicial authorities have been pursuing a joint investigation into these allegations. Due diligence has therefore been applied thoroughly”.

Bamieh confirmed that one of the allegedly corrupt Eulex officials named in her letters to superiors – Italy’s Francesco Florit – is under internal investigation.

But she said a second one – the Czech Republic’s Jaroslava Novotna – is not.

She also accused Eulex of deleting emails pertaining to her complaints against Novotna in 2012 in an attempt to “bury” any probe.

Passing the buck

“It’s a lie – there’s an investigation into Florit but not into Novotna”, Bamieh said of the EU statement on “due diligence”.

“It’s a complete joke. I do think there should be an independent investigation and I’ve been saying this from day one”.

“How can the people of Kosovo trust them [Eulex] when they keep lying? … What hope is there for SITF to be able to guarantee safety for witnesses if Eulex doesn’t change?”, she added, referring to the Special Investigative Task Force (SITF), an Eulex unit looking into war crimes allegations against Kosovo politicians, including PM Hashim Thaci.

The British prosecutor said that Fernando Gentilini, an Italian who is the EU foreign service’s top official on the Western Balkans, should be held accountable for the mess.

“I name him because, at the end of the day, Eulex is run by the EEAS [the EU foreign service]. But they always try to pass the buck … they say: ‘It’s not us. It’s the [EU] Council’. The Council says: ‘It’s not us. It’s the EEAS’. Nobody takes responsibility. The EEAS should have some kind of transparency and accountability mechanism for its missions”.

Bamieh is not alone in calling for external oversight.

Ulrike Lunacek, an Austrian Green MEP, said, on Friday, that Eulex “must be duly investigated by an external and independent body”, leading to a potential “reconfiguration and redefinition of the mandate of the whole mission”.

Elmar Brok, a German centre-right MEP who chairs the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee, has put the Eulex scandal on the agenda of its next session, on 3 November.

“We have to listen to the people responsible and decide how to proceed”, he told this website.

Doris Pack, a German centre-right politician and former MEP who has worked on Kosovo since the break-up of former Yugoslavia, also called for an Eulex audit.

“There should be a total check of Eulex, otherwise there will no longer be any trust in it and we will totally lose the right to teach others [on how to apply rule of law]”, she told EUobserver.

Thanks, but no thanks

EU countries are reluctant to let outsiders look behind the scenes, however.

The EU foreign service gave a confidential briefing on Eulex to member states’ ambassadors on the Political and Security Committee (PSC) on Tuesday.

An EU diplomat familiar with the briefing voiced support for whistleblowers in general, saying: “It’s important to needle [EU] bureaucracy … if there has been improper conduct, then society should know and should care about such things”.

But the diplomat added: “The general conviction [in the PSC] was that it [the Eulex affair] should be handled by an internal process, not by external people. We’ve created internal structures to deal with problems like this, so we should use them”.

The UK – which seconded Bamieh to Eulex after a distinguished carreer in its own Crown Prosecution Service – is toeing the line.

A British foreign office spokesman told this website on Friday: “We are aware of the allegations in the press about the Eulex mission. This is a matter for the mission to respond to”.

EUobserver understands the British embassy in Pristina also on Friday ordered Bamieh to stop talking to media.

A German foreign ministry spokesman said Berlin advocates "a resolute and comprehensive clarification of facts concerning the allegations".

But he added: "We place full confidence in the work of the new as well as in the work of the previous head of mission [Eulex]. Both have contributed and are contributing actively to the investigation".

For his part, Joao Sousa, an SITF spokesman, shrugged off Bamieh’s concern that Eulex malpractice might harm the SITF’s work by making war crimes witnesses fearful to co-operate.

He told this website the special task force “is a fully autonomous investigative entity based in Brussels, conducting its operational work independently from Eulex”.

“The SITF has its own team of investigators and prosecutors, and has adopted special safeguards to ensure the confidentiality of its documents and the safety of its witnesses”.

But an EU source noted the SITF is based in Brussels and is to hold future trials in The Hague precisely due to lack of confidence in Eulex and Kosovo courts’ ability to protect informants and to follow due process.

Presumption of guilt

Meanwhile, Bamieh is being forced to stay in Pristina to answer questions in an Eulex investigation, launched on Friday, into whether she is the source of the Koha Ditore leaks.

She is forced to stay, protected by Eulex bodyguards, despite getting death threats from the Kosovo underworld.

Both she and the editor-in-chief of Koha Ditore, Agron Bajrami, say she is not the source of the leaks.

But Eulex suspended her from her post and told press that she handed over the internal documents before it began the leak investigation on Friday, violating the principle of presumption of innocence.

“I am going to Eulex to receive my charges [on the leak investigation] tomorrow”, she told EUobserver on Thursday.

Bamieh noted that she never intended to go public until she was “frog-marched” out of her office by two Eulex guards in front of her colleagues like a criminal.

“They [Eulex] keep telling the press I’m a crazy woman, a disgruntled employee who wants revenge”, she said.

“I don’t have much, but I have my reputation to protect … I don’t have any grudge against Eulex. I have many good colleagues there and many people there work damn hard”.

She added: “I’m not mad. How dare they attack my mental health?”.

“It’s really awful to suffer all this stress. At times, you begin to doubt yourself. Then you say: ‘But those are the facts. These are the intercepts. These are the texts’,” Bamieh noted, referring to intercepts of illicit conversations between Novotna, who has not been suspended, and suspected gangsters.
